verdejo • Rueda’s elegant white •
Verdejo is Spain’s most notable white grape variety and has been known since at least the 11th century. Believed to have been brought from North Africa to Rueda (Castilla & Leon) by the Moors, Verdejo has adapted well to the high-altitude sites (700-900 m asl) and continental climate of Rueda DO. The variety was nearly destroyed by the phylloxera outbreak in early 20th century, and was brought back to prominence in mid 1970-s by Marqués de Riscal wine company.
